“I write about what has been lost…” Antonio Lobo Antunes’ work is obsessed with memories of the colonial war in which he enlisted as a military doctor and the practice of psychiatry in a Lisbon hospital.
His stories, interior monologues or nocturnal ruminations, make us share the intimate torments of beings torn between the past and the present.
In a bar, at night, readers make the singularity of this writing and the music of the Portuguese language heard. During a stroll through Lisbon, characters emerge, revealing fragments of their disenchanted lives, as if they belonged to the fictional universe of the writer Antonio Lobo Antunes.
In hushed salons, two women share their erudition. The author, however, evades this by stating: “Everything is autobiographical and nothing is autobiographical… I would like to put all of life between the covers of a book.”

"Passionate about art and literature, my academic career lies between these two poles, since I was a student at the University of Rouen in Modern Literature, at Paris VII in Plastic Arts and then at the School of Fine Arts in Rouen. I was led to do various exhibitions during the ten years when I was exclusively a visual artist, and it is this multidisciplinary practice that led me to documentary film. I have practiced other professions: translator from Portuguese and Spanish of poetic works, critical texts on artists for exhibition catalogs, journalist, photographer. I taught art history and led various artistic workshops.
After writing and directing a few short films, I made my first documentary film in 2005, "Explication des salamanders", which tells the shadows of the family novel and the scars of exile. Autobiographical, this film, at the antipodes of sterile realism, allows the truth of each protagonist (that of my parents and mine) to be expressed singularly.
