It is difficult to recommend reading Martinet’s works to just anyone, to strangers whose shoulders you do not know will be broad enough to absorb the shock.
Because we do not immerse ourselves in a book by Martinet as we turn on the television or surf the Internet, with a distracted eye, to relax. “Reading for pleasure” seems out of place here. It seems more appropriate to speak of an initiatory ordeal and morbid aesthetic pleasure, as the writing is as beautiful as the words are desperate.
We have never read a more pessimistic writer than Martinet, his universe is of a frightening darkness, woven of shadows and mud. No friendship is possible between beings, love, even less. Any relationship is doomed to failure.
Reading Martinet is a powerful experience that plunges us into the depths of our own abyss, into the murky waters of our most archaic unconscious, where violence rubs shoulders with abjection.
However, perhaps that is what is troubling, we sometimes feel a disappointed humanism surfacing, a tenderness swallowed by dint of having been reprimanded.
