The Maurice Lemaire tunnel has crossed the Vosges from one end to the other and has linked Alsace to Lorraine since 1937. Closed to traffic in 2004 following the Mont Blanc accident, it has been the subject of huge rehabilitation work for four years, including the parallel drilling of a safety tunnel. There is a lot of digging in Saintes-Marie-aux-Mines… There has even been digging for five centuries in this mountain that has become “gruyere”: the valley, heir to a mining tradition of silver exploitation, has taken over this construction site through which symbolic events, know-how and the intimate spirit of its inhabitants are brought back to life. The tunnel workers, like archaeologists, revive the past and exalt the spirit of the valley. By drilling into the rock, they help us to uncover the secrets of this astonishing region where everything is “stories of depth”
